Dr. Andy Barr
Chief Technology Officer
Andy is an electronics engineer with a PhD in BioEngineering. He is a co-inventor of the Smart Tourniquet and his primary contribution to this invention has been the pioneering application of strain-gauge plethysmography to the tourniquet sensory apparatus. He is also the owner of Marturion Electronics Inc (a Georgia based company) which has developed all the electronics and firmware for the existing prototype devices.
His early career was within the Queen’s University of Belfast Department of Orthopaedic Surgery within Musgrave Park Hospital under Professor RAB Mollan. In this tenure he was part of a team that successfully introduced the use of strain-gauge plethysmography of the calf as a tool to screen all patients post-operatively for the onset of DVT.
He left that company to found Marturion in 2001 as a ISO13485 certified business providing specialist design and manufacturing services to the medical device industry. Marturion has a wealth of experience in the development of many products and is a supplier of both design and manufacturing services to many medical device companies. Of specific relevance to this invention, Marturion has invested over a decade working with non-invasive blood pressure technology.
Andy has brought together his understanding of plethysmography together with his years of experience with NIBP in order to innovate this new approach to safe determination of LOP – primarily intending to ensure at all times an optimum selection of tourniquet pressure to prevent bleeding in emergency treatment.
